The unified geographical area of Sunnhordland with its archipelago, the fjords, and the mountains close to the ocean owns sites and landscapes of international geological significance. The geopark is managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development, and was accepted as Norwegian Geopark in 2019. Assisted by the Institute of geoscience at University of Bergen (UiB), and The Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU) the application for approval as a UNESCO Global Geopark was delivered in November 2021.
