About

At the foot of Folgefonna, surrounded by the fjord, glacier, and towering mountains, you’ll find Hotel Sundal – a charming small hotel from 1889, lovingly restored with respect for both its history and surroundings. Here, you stay in the peaceful village of Sundal in Kvinnherad, nestled in stunning nature and with easy access to iconic outdoor experiences and local culture.

The hotel’s 11 rooms are designed with care and a focus on sleep quality: all beds feature Coco-Mat mattresses, and the rooms are stocked with organic skincare products, bathrobes, and extra towels. Nine of the rooms have shared bathroom facilities, open windows, morning breeze from the fjord, and views of the glacier, offering a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere. Two rooms feature private bathrooms and fireplaces.

At Hotel Sundal – formerly known as Hardanger Fjord Lodge – nature takes center stage, both indoors and out. Start your day with freshly brewed coffee, sourdough bread, local cheeses, and organic apple juice from Hardanger – and end it with a four-course dinner made from scratch, using ingredients from small local producers and the surrounding nature. The kitchen is the heart of the hotel, and the passion of those behind the stove is evident in every bite and every moment.

Want to bring the taste of Hardanger outdoors? Order a picnic basket – packed with tasty dishes, drinks, and a blanket. Perfect for a relaxed day by the fjord or a hike up the valley.

Unique experiences just outside the door:

  • Bondhusvatnet – one of Hardanger’s most iconic nature spots, is just a short walk from the hotel. Expect emerald-green waters, a glacier backdrop, and one of the most scenic hikes in the region.
  • Trolltunga – Norway’s most spectacular rock formation is just a short drive away.
  • Folgefonna – experience the glacier up close with guided hikes or summit tours.
  • Baroniet Rosendal – Norway’s only manor house, with beautiful gardens, art exhibitions, and concerts in historic surroundings, is also a short drive or a scenic bike ride away using the hotel’s rental bikes.

A story you become part of

Hotel Sundal has a rich history dating back to 1889, when Erik Gausvik and Anna Eikenes built both the hotel and the mountain hut Breidablikk at 1320 meters above sea level. The hotel has hosted emperors, European aristocrats, and mountaineers – and today, Caroline and Harald, along with their dog Frøya, bring warmth, life, and memorable experiences to the historic timber walls.

Welcome to Hotel Sundal – a soulful stay between fjord, glacier, and mighty mountains!
