About

From ancient ice to new energy. Electricity is renewable, but the glaciers are vulnerable. This summer, you can experience the photo exhibition "Under pressure" in Tysso I power station at Kraftmuseet. The photos show various glacier motifs from Folgefonna.

Glaciers are magnificent and fascinating colossi with their beautiful blue colours and deep crevasses. With slow and patient movement, they shape the landscape beneath them using gravity as well as their enormous weight, like a slow-moving river.

Glaciers are of great importance for local outdoor activities and tourism, as a source of meltwater – and of energy.

But the glaciers are under pressure. They are disappearing, one by one. In the Alps alone, hundreds of ski resorts have disappeared in recent decades. When operations at the summer ski resort on our local glacier Folgefonna stopped in 2024, not many months went by before meltwater swallowed several of the masts and the ski lift collapsed.

Water from Norwegian glaciers is used for hydroelectric power and for electricity. The water circulates and returns. Thus, the energy is renewable, but the glaciers – formed over thousands of years – can disappear in a single lifetime.

The exhibition can be experienced June 1st–August 30th.
