About

Nobody makes the Trolltunga more accessible than the Trolltunga Active guides. Even if most visitors join the guided classic hike to Trolltunga - there are other options too! This Trolltunga Active adventure combines hiking, biking, and climbing to reach the famous rock formation.

The Trolltunga Via Ferrata tour starts with a 6 km long bike ride from Skjeggedal. It continues with the Via Ferrata climb, where you will climb a 250-meter-high mountain part. Afterward, it is only a short walking distance to the Trolltunga.

During the entire tour, you have a fantastic view of Lake Ringedalsvatnet. Still, the arrival at Trolltunga and the view from there, of course, is the highlight. The trained guides from Trolltunga Active ensure your safety at any time and, last but not least, keep you motivated on the go. They will also tell you a lot of exciting and interesting facts about the area.

The trip in total takes about 10-12 hours. It is suitable for everyone over 15 years of age with normal good physical condition and no knee damage or excessive fear of heights. Bicycles, helmets, climbing- and all other necessary equipment is included.

In addition to this tour, Trolltunga Active offers several other exciting activities around the Trolltunga, all year round.

FAQ

Trolltunga Via Ferrata is an alternative route to the famous Trolltunga rock formation in Hardanger, western Norway. Instead of following the main hiking trail, you climb up the mountain face on a fixed steel-rung and cable system — a via ferrata — before walking the final stretch to the Trolltunga viewpoint. The route starts with a 4 km flat gravel path along Lake Ringedalsvatnet, continues with a 1 km steep trail and then three via ferrata walls (the tallest 250 m), giving roughly 400 metres of vertical climbing. After the climb, you walk the last 3 km to Trolltunga and descend on the regular marked trail back to Skjeggedal. The via ferrata is operated by Trolltunga Active, based in Tyssedal, about 2.5 hours by car from Bergen.

The route is graded advanced (B/C on the international via ferrata scale). You do not need prior climbing experience — the steel rungs and cables provide footing throughout — but you need good overall fitness. The full round trip is 24–28 km with around 800 metres of elevation gain and takes 8–12 hours. The climbing section alone takes 1.5–3 hours depending on the group. You should not have serious knee problems or a strong fear of heights. One reviewer compared the physical demands to the Inca Trail, noting that "average fitness" means being comfortable with a full day of mountain hiking, not just casual walking.

Yes, but only if you or someone in your group has solid via ferrata experience. You must bring your own equipment (harness, via ferrata lanyard set with energy absorber, and helmet) and pay a maintenance fee per person. Equipment cannot be rented for unguided climbs — the rental service is reserved for guided tours. If you are unsure about your experience level, choose the guided option: the guide handles all safety equipment, gives instruction on the wall, and knows the route intimately.

As of 2025, the guided day tour starts at NOK 1,550 per person (roughly €135 / £115 / $150). It includes a professional guide, all climbing equipment (harness, helmet, via ferrata set), hiking poles and microspikes or snowshoes when needed, a professional photo service, and the shuttle between P3 and P2 (running 1 June – 18 September). Students and young travellers get 10% off with valid ID at the meeting point. Since prices may be adjusted between seasons, check current rates and book directly at trolltunga-active.com. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Hiking boots with ankle support, a windproof jacket, a mid-layer, a cap or beanie, sunglasses, sunscreen, a backpack of at least 35 litres (leave room for the climbing harness), at least 2 litres of water, and plenty of food — sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, a banana. Bring gloves with good grip for the climbing sections. In cold or wet conditions, add a wool base layer, warm mid-layer, waterproof trousers, spare socks and a beanie. Reviewers recommend bringing more warm layers than you think you need, as much of the route is exposed. Rain jackets, rain trousers, hiking boots and backpacks can be rented at the base in Skjeggedal.

Trolltunga Active does not cancel tours for bad weather — only when conditions become dangerous, meaning strong winds, thunderstorms, or icing. The guides carry microspikes or snowshoes and assess conditions throughout the day. Bring waterproof layers and warm clothing regardless: the weather in the mountains can change quickly, and large parts of the route are exposed. Check yr.no before your tour day.

The Sky Ladder — Himmelstigen in Norwegian — is an optional 50-metre vertical climbing extension added in spring 2026. It comes after the three main via ferrata walls and offers an extra adrenaline push with panoramic views over Ringedalsvatnet and toward the Folgefonna glacier. The Sky Ladder is included in the standard guided tour at no extra cost; you can choose to skip it on the day. Trolltunga Active also offers the Sky Ladder Sunset package, an overnight tour with a glamping dome, dinner, breakfast and a visit to Trolltunga at sunset.

Meet at 07:30 at the Trolltunga Active Base, Skjeggedal 20, 5770 Tyssedal. Tyssedal is about 7 km from Odda town centre (10 minutes by car) and roughly 2.5 hours from Bergen by car via Hardanger. Drive to Skjeggedal and park at P2 (automatic plate recognition). The evening before, you can attend an optional information session at 21:00 at Trolltunga Hotel in Tyssedal, where you can ask questions and check gear. There is no public transport to Skjeggedal itself, but buses run to Odda and Tyssedal.

Participants must be at least 15 years old. Good physical fitness is required. You should not have serious knee problems or a strong fear of heights. A minimum of 2 participants is needed for a tour to run.

Yes. Trolltunga Active offers several overnight options — including the Sky Ladder Sunset with a glamping dome, and Sunset-Sunrise trips where you spend the night in the mountains and experience Trolltunga at sunset and sunrise.
