Exciting experiences on the Folgefonna Glacier

Web Daniel Tengs Visitfonna

Explore the southernmost glacier in Norway - take part in exciting activities that you will remember. The Folgefonna Glacier offers unique experiences for the whole family.

The Folgefonna, the third largest glacier on mainland Norway, is the very core of the Folgefonna National Park. The Folgefonna has been a popular attraction and a “reason to go” since the mid-19th century when international tourists came to Hardanger. The interest in the glacier has not diminished over the years.

Today, several suppliers offer exciting activities for the whole family on and around the glacier. How about exploring crevasses and ice that is several thousand years old? The Folgefonni Glacier Team offers guided glacier hikes on the Juklavass glacier, a part of the Folgefonna - an experience that you will remember! The guided glacier hikes are suitable for everyone between 7 and 80 years of age; they will always be adapted to the participants’ skills and wishes.

To get to the glacier and the starting point of the guided glacier hikes, you drive up the 19 kilometers long Glacier Road starting in the center of the national park village Jondal. The drive will be an experience in itself – the road offers impressive scenic contrasts.

At the end of Glacier Road, on the Folgefonna Glacier, there is also the world’s most popular summer ski center, the FONNA Glacier Ski Resort. Here you will find alpine-ski trails for the whole family, a freestyle park, cross-country ski trails, and opportunities for snowshoeing. Experience summer in Winter-Wonderland and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view over the glacier, the Hardangerfjord, and the North Sea - 1450 meters above sea level.

If you do not want to ski, need a break in between, or are just hungry - then you should visit the new service building Fonna 1199. Located directly by the glacier, it offers sanitary facilities, ski rental, souvenir sales, and a restaurant and café with tempting dishes made from local ingredients.

Talking about exciting experiences - you should also pay a visit to the Buer National Park Farm. It is an ideal starting point for hikes to the Buer glacier and the Reinanuten summit. Buer has been a popular travel destination as long as there have been tourists in Hardanger! Highland cattle, pigs, and chickens live on the farm and are happy to be visited, especially by children. In addition, several picnic tables and benches have been set up; in other words - the Buer National Park Farm is a perfect destination for families!
