Røldal is known as the destination in Norway with the most stable and guaranteed snow conditions. Skiing and other Winter adventures are lined up and waiting for you here!
Røldal is one of very few mountain villages in Western Norway, and has been an important place for travellers between Eastern and Western Norway for hundreds of years. Røldal is an integrated part of Hardanger, and many people stop here on their way to and from the fjords of the region. It is definitely worth scheduling a longer stop in order to experience everything the snowy mountain village has to offer.
Røldal is particularly known for the large quantities of snow that arrive every winter, and Røldal ski resort does not use the slogan “the deepest snow in Europe” for no reason. Most of the ski resort is situated above the treeline and offers large freeriding areas in addition to 17 slopes suited for all difficulty levels. In other words, there is something for everyone here! It’s also possible to rent skiing equipment from the ski resort.
Every Spring, Røldal hosts the Røldal Freeride Challenge competition, and the energetic vibe in the village at this time is definitely something you should experience. It should also be mentioned that there are endless possibilities for outdoor activities in Hardangervidda National Park, which is easily accessible from Røldal all year.
After an active day outdoors in the fresh mountain air it’s a good thing that both Røldalsterrassen and Hordatun hotel are located close to the ski resort. They offer good vibes, local food and drink, fireplaces and comfortable accommodation. They also have breathtaking views over Røldalsvatnet lake and the surrounding mountains.
If you can’t get enough of the fresh mountain air, Røldalsterrassen can tempt you with outdoor heat lamps on their terrace. Or maybe you prefer getting warm inside at their afterski, Skut Bar?
Hordatun hotel offers hotel rooms and apartments, and is conveniently located between the village centre and the ski resort. Here you can enjoy the warmth from the fireplace and the fantastic views over Røldalsvatnet lake.
In addition to skiing and other winter adventures, Røldal has an interesting cultural history to tell. During mediaeval times, Røldal was one of the most well-known pilgrimage destinations in Norway, and pilgrimage to the village is still popular today. The pilgrims come to see the healing crucifix located inside Røldal stave church, built around 1250 AD. According to legend, the crucifix sweats each “jonsok” (6th July). A visit to the village during Winter obviously doesn’t coincide with this date, but it is still worth visiting the beautiful stave church. During the Winter a ski trail is made in the village centre, and this trail passes the church.
If you are looking for a destination in Norway with guaranteed stable snow, the mountain village of Røldal is the place to go. Here you will get to experience the deepest snow in Europe, freeride skiing above the treeline, atmospheric accommodations and restaurants, breathtaking views and cultural history, all in the same village.
