Røldal is one of very few mountain villages in Western Norway, and has been an important place for travellers between Eastern and Western Norway for hundreds of years. Røldal is an integrated part of Hardanger, and many people stop here on their way to and from the fjords of the region. Røldal is particularly known for the large quantities of snow that arrive every winter, and Røldal ski resort does not use the slogan “the deepest snow in Europe” for no reason. Every Spring, Røldal hosts the Røldal Freeride Challenge competition, and the energetic vibe in the village at this time is definitely something you should experience. In addition to skiing and other winter adventures, Røldal has an interesting cultural history to tell. During mediaeval times, Røldal was one of the most well-known pilgrimage destinations in Norway, and pilgrimage to the village is still popular today. The pilgrims come to see the healing crucifix located inside Røldal stave church, built around 1250 AD. According to legend, the crucifix sweats each “jonsok” (6th July). A visit to the village during Winter obviously doesn’t coincide with this date, but it is still worth visiting the beautiful stave church. During the Winter a ski trail is made in the village centre, and this trail passes the church.
