Rosendal sits by the fjord beneath the Folgefonna glacier, and there are several ways to get here. By car, you can drive via the Jondal tunnel or take a ferry across the fjord. If you'd like the journey to be part of the experience, the Hardangerfjord Express runs from Bergen along the fjord in about two hours and docks right in the centre.
If you're already staying at Rosendal Fjordhotel or Avlsgården, you're right in the middle of it — and can start the day at your own pace.
From the centre, it's a short walk up to Baroniet Rosendal — Norway's only barony and Scandinavia's smallest castle. The main building dates from 1665 and has been in continuous use ever since. During summer, guided tours run every half hour in peak season, in Norwegian and English. Inside, the Baroniet is not simply a museum — you walk through a home, from the Red Hall to the library with its centuries-old books, past furniture, paintings and chandeliers.
Outside lies Rosendal Have — a Renaissance garden with geometric beds, a kitchen garden and a greenhouse. The roses bloom through June and July, and herbs and berries from the garden are harvested and used in the Baroniet's own restaurants.
Rosendal Havecafé serves lunch made from ingredients grown in the kitchen and herb garden, with seating inside the greenhouse — looking out towards the castle and Malmangernuten — or outdoors when the weather allows.
Throughout summer, the Baroniet hosts a rich cultural programme with concerts in the Knight's Hall and the courtyard, theatre and talks. Booking ahead is wise, especially in July and August.
After lunch in the greenhouse, a short, flat walk takes you to Hattebergsfossen — close enough to hear the waterfall thunder, but not so far that it eats into half the day. Back in the centre, Steinparken has stone sculptures, a Dinosaur House and geology exhibits, free and open year-round, while Rosendal Putballpark nearby offers footgolf on nine courses.
If you want to go higher, Malmangernuten (890 m) starts right from the Fjordhotel — four hours return, and the fjords open wider with every step up.
A few kilometres south of the centre lies Galleri Guddal — a gallery in a converted barn on a cluster farm over a thousand years old. The gallery shows six to seven exhibitions a year featuring artists of national standing, and the shop carries work by more than 70 artists. Once you've seen the exhibitions, Kafé Gjøa in the same building serves coffee and homemade cakes. The gallery is open Friday to Sunday. You can drive or cycle, but the walk there is worth making time for — an easy mix of footpath and gravel road through open farmland.
Back in the centre, Folgefonnsenteret houses the tourist information office. The centre has 18 interactive stations on the Folgefonna National Park, water cycles and glaciers, plus the Skaluren Collection — a small exhibition on traditional boat-building included in the ticket. A good stop for getting your bearings on what else the area has to offer.
If you still have a little time, treat yourself to a meal at Elins Matgleder, right in the centre.
When the day winds down, you don't need to go anywhere. Rosendal Fjordhotel sits down by the water, with rooms facing fjord and mountains, a sauna by the fjord's edge and a restaurant where head chef Jon Aga cooks with fjord fish, apples and cider by season. On the Baroniet grounds, Avlsgården and Fruehuset offer rooms in old, listed buildings, with breakfast in the original kitchen and centuries in the walls. One gives you fjord and modern calm, the other a night steeped in history.
If you stay an extra day, there's more to take on. Set out for Melderskin (1,426 m) with the trail starting right in Rosendal centre, or drive to Bondhusvatnet and hike in towards the glacier. Folgefonni Breførarlag runs guided glacier hikes and ice kayaking on Folgefonna. And out on the fjord, Salmon Eye awaits — a floating experience centre you reach by all-electric boat from Rosendal.
The cluster farm at Guddal, where the gallery stands today, once had as many as 54 buildings — and is one of the very few preserved cluster farms left in Norway. The farm is over a thousand years old.
